Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas California Earns National Recognition as the First Humane Society To Go Solar
The dogs, cats and rabbits that have temporary residence at RCHS enjoy comfortable winters thanks to heaters in each pet area. This year, the humane society will be able to offer a safe, abundant and secure energy source for the comfort of their animals.
The solar installation also means free energy and hot water to wash and dry the toys, blankets, and beds that provide comfort and enjoyment for the companion animals at Rancho Coastal Humane Society. Solar heating harnesses the power of the sun to provide heat for hot water and space heating.
Research: Karen Cardinal, of the National Renewable Energy Lab, located in Golden, Colorado, did a country-wide search and came to the same conclusion, Rancho Coastal Humane Society appears to be the first humane society, nationwide, to make the installation.
Cost: Total cost of the installation was $400,000. The State of California has provided a rebate of $190,000.00. Rancho Coastal Humane Society is currently in a capital campaign to raise the remaining $210,000, not covered by the State incentive.
History: Rancho Coastal Humane Society, a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization, has been serving greater San Diego County since 1961. The mission of Rancho Coastal Humane Society is to care for homeless companion animals and to educate the public about pet overpopulation and responsible care.
